Life As One of Them
Look at the crap you tolerate from other people. For so many reasons: because they don’t know any better, because they’re a friend, because it’s not worth making an issue. Now subtract out the offenses you’ve been guilty of yourself. Take what is left over and consider it equity you’ve stored up, what the world would let you get away with if you felt so inclined.
How much easier would it be going through life taking advantage of this buffer? We would have so much less to worry about with that sword cleared out from above our head. To live life like a profligate who understands they’d never let him starve.
Why don’t we do this? Because we know that what he has coming to him is rarely poetic, rather everyday “a disease..a plague…a cancer,” that eats away at them by giving them everything they’ve ever wanted. The torture of being awful but unaware of it. The butt of an unsaid joke. The silent example of what not to be.
When you look at what people do, how they act and take advantage of others, see what it does to them as people. Don’t wait for karmic justice. It isn’t coming. It’s already there. You didn’t choose this path because of the deterrents to the alternative. It was the remunerative incentives, the first of which was the capability for this introspection.

Hi Ryan,
Sow and reap.
Happy Thanksgiving.
Quite simply, Ryan, people have forgotten how to act human. 100.
I’ve been reading your blog for some time now and cannot help but think “What an asshole” whenever I visit your site (it’s fun to get worked up every once in a while). Sometimes I think that you must realize that you’re a master of irony and are so observant of this world that you’re just putting all of us on and then I am again reminded when I read a post like this that you’re just an asshole.

I’ve been reading this blog for a few months now and have, like @BHankman, at times thought Ryan is an asshole. But I’m confused how this particular post would make someone think that. I almost look at it as encouragement. Watching people treat others like shit can be even more disheartening when you see those same people get ahead in the world. Waiting around for “Karmic justice”, at least in the realm that most people imagine it (i.e. a business failure or getting their ass kicked) can be pretty disappointing because, in most cases, it never comes. Instead realize that justice can come in other forms and then get on with your life. What this lifestyle or attitude does to their soul is the ultimate punishment. These thoughts are pretty comforting in my opinion and can free you of the burden of waiting for someone to get “what he has coming to him.”
“One Of Them.” Fucking sweet. This is another instant classic. I’ve been reading this site since you started it, and I don’t see you as an asshole at all. Quite the opposite, in fact. Thanks!
The worst thing about this website is how patronising it is.
How could this website possibly be interpreted as patronizing?
Allow me to utilise your argumentative style:
Seriously?
Keep a scorecard, Me vs Jerks? What a clever approach to expending energy in a negative way.
I read your posts because you do have a lot of insight for such a young man. I hope you maintain this quality as you age. You know that time and experience will change your perception, especially philosophy and ethics as you see them now.
Time becomes more precious than anything as I get older. Wasting it on Me vs Jerks is not worth consideration anymore. It should never have been worth considering.
